Central to letting go of unserving beliefs is the ability to be in The
Now. One of the ways to strengthen the ability to do so is meditation.
Jon Kabat-Zinn says that meditation involves 'purposefully refining our
capacity for paying attention, ultimately to anything and everything
that might be relevant to navigating in the world with open eyes and
hearts.'
Meditation can be seen as involving two parts.
The first is concentration, here we notice that the mind has a life of
its own and tends to go all over the place. By observing this chatter
we can become less reactive.
The other part is mindfulness, the non-judgemental awareness of what
the mind is occupying itself with, the non attachment to what is going
on.
Out of this comes the experience of seeing the whole, new
interconnections, beyond the limited 'cause and effect' way of seeing
things, beyond definitions such as something being 'a problem' and
something else being 'the solution'. Mindfulness is the non attachment
to meaning and interpretation, the knowing that all just 'is'.
In other words Mindfulness gives us the opportunity to attach new meanings, based in a more embracing and complex understanding.
Start the practice of meditating, even if it is just closing our eyes a
few times during the day, while noticing what is going on in your mind.
If possible write some of these observations down, you will then recognise them easily next time they surface!
Enjoy!
Warm Regards
Charlotte
