Managing Moments on Life's Journey

Making lasting changes! Through Micro-Managing Ourselves

Whenever we take the time to consider our lives in perspective and realise that something has to change, the question emerges: ‘how do I do that, how do I make the changes and stick to them?’

Getting a clear picture of what we want is the first step. However we often don’t get further than the vision stage, all dreaming…. One of the concerns that stops further action can be a worry about whether we have the willpower to carry through with the change.

Willpower is the element that we need to sustain us through making changes. We once thought that it was something we were either lucky enough to have or sadly lacked.

I don’t believe that willpower is an internal characteristic that we either possess or not. Rather it is a function of:

  • how much we want something
  • how well we recall this at the ‘danger’ times
  • how low our distraction/stress levels are
  • our level of self awareness
  • our ability to self manage.

Change starts with the vision, then the overall plan, and then cultivating the ability to micro manage ourselves. Before being able to self manage we need to spend time on self awareness or being Mindful. If we want to stop smoking we need to be aware of the self-talk that makes it okay to keep smoking; we need to know when the most challenging times occur and how to ‘survive’ those times; we need to know how to counteract the mind jumping to conclusions about how hopeless we are if we ‘fall in’ so that we can get back onto our plan and continue.

During the last year I have supported many people through change. Stopping smoking is probably one of the hardest habits to break, however interestingly once people come to us, want to quit, and we get them through the micro managing tools and exercises it hasn’t failed yet.

You can now download the change page from our website and naturally we would consider it a privilege to support you through your change.

Until next time
Warm regards
Charlotte
